Lab Notes: 1/24/12

The first day of Spring Training has come and gone and like many other first days, there was nothing out of the ordinary. I don't like saying there wasn't anything special but we are now one day closer to Opening Day...so we've got that going for us, which is nice.

For major league teams, the only news worth reporting is usually their high-priced, free agent signee has arrived at camp or a returner has either dropped or gained significant weight. We don't have any free agents coming to camp, but there were a few new additions to the roster. For the latest, check out the News & Notes.

News & Notes:
  • The program added two players in the Aaron and Tyler Lindgren, outfielders from Willoughby South. Tyler comes on board from Notre Dame College while Aaron, already at Lake Erie, spent the fall on the gridiron with the football team.
  • Pitchers did some light tossing gearing up for their first full bullpen session on Wednesday. The pens will be short in nature but will prep them for the first live bullpens on Saturday.
  • The new hitting coach put on quite a display during his first day in the cage. This should help for Saturday's live bullpens.

Lab Notes: 1/16/12

There's still a week before the students officially return for the spring semester and there isn't much going on around the Lake Erie campus...yet. There has been a buzz generating around the OC from the anticipation of spring training.

News & Notes:
  • Players are reporting this week for open, non-mandatory workouts at the Osborne Center.
  • Pitchers on campus will throw light bullpens on Saturday.
  • The first full-squad workout will be held on Tuesday, January 24.

The Car Push

Throughout the Storm fall practices, the baseball team engaged in a series of fitness challenges after many of the practices. The players were conveniently split up into their respective SFL teams for the year-long competition. This particular event, "The Car Push," was simple in concept, but not in practice. The goal was for each team to push the car from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time possible. The rest of the competition details can be explained in the video by Storm pitching coach Mark Sankovich. RAGE ON!

Start Me Up

As someone who grew up in sports, I have always heard stretching is the most important thing to do before engaging in any kind of physical activity. I could never touch my toes so I hated this concept. But after eight years of coaching, I have strung together a series of exercises that enable athletes to get their blood flowing and get ready for physical activity without embarrassing themselves by demonstrating their lack of flexibility. The following dynamic warm-up routine is performed before every game and practice by Lake Erie baseball. A special thanks to junior outfielder Zach Mosbarger for his assistance.
