This Week in Video Baseball

We are hours away from the month of February and nearing the halfway point of Spring Training. With Opening Day three weeks away, the players now have their daily drills engrained into their routines as they prep for Southern Indiana (February 22, 3pm). Here is an all-access pass to the past week of Lake Erie Spring Training.

Spring (Training) Has Sprung

The first weekend of Spring Training has come and gone but there isn't anything of much substance to report. As is the narrative with every first week of Spring Training, everyone is excited to be back, the pitching was ahead of the hitting (with a few exceptions), and no one can wait for the season to start (February 22 at Southern Indiana). Here's a brief recap of what's happened thus far at Spring Training.

Lab Notes:
  • Each pitcher threw their third bullpen of the spring, throwing a live, 30-pitch bullpen on either Saturday or Sunday.
  • They will follow-up this week with pens on Tuesday and/or Wednesday.
  • Friday's first full squad workout was spent mostly on team defense, with some mass fungos at the end, followed by a session in the weight room.
  • In case you missed it, Tiberius (pictured) was mentioned in a recent Plain Dealer article on
And finally...

An American went to Scotland and played golf with a newly acquainted Scottish golfer. After a bad tee shot, he played a "Mulligan," then proceeded to hit an extremely good tee shot. He then asked the Scot, "What do you call a Mulligan in Scotland?" The Scotsman answered, "We call it hitting three."

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at Russ Hogue taking a few Mulligans himself as he tries to get a feel for his swing before the Fungo Golf season tees off in February. Keep swinging for the fences!

Mind if We Play Through?

Pitchers and catchers ended a week ago and we are through the first weekend of Spring Training and each player is getting back into the routine of playing baseball everyday. As any baseball person will tell you, pitchers are on their own schedule and usually have a lot more free time on their hands than the other players. There are many activities that help keep them occupied between throwing sessions and out of the way of coaches and position players. One of those activities is called Fungo Golf.

While the specifics may vary from team to team, the basic rules are the same: pick a spot on the field and hit that spot in the fewest number of strokes. Since Spring Training is a time for players to prep for the upcoming season, Sophomore/Pitcher Russ Hogue picked up a fungo during pitchers and catchers to kick off some rust before the season opens in less than a month and work on his fungo skills.

When I Grow Up...

Lake Erie had a special guest during today's workout. Nate Warner, a 6th grader from Mentor, Ohio, stopped by the Osborne Center to observe the final day of pitchers and catchers for a class project. Each Storm pitcher threw a short pen in preparation for Saturday's live action in the cage when Spring Training is officially underway.

After the bullpens, Nate sat down with sophomore/pitcher Russ Hogue to talk about his future plans in baseball, as well as his aspirations to manage in the bigs. Thanks for coming out, Nate! Best of luck in your baseball career!

And We're Back

Lake Erie opened camp yesterday with the start of pitchers and catchers, which means the first full squad spring training workout is right around the corner (Friday, 12:30 pm). Finally, baseball is back! It couldn't have come at a better time too, because here really hasn't been much for the pitchers and catchers to do since finals week ended the first week of December.

It's been awhile since we have had a team baseball workout (November 16) so it feels good to be back on the "field" (so to speak). Opening Day will be upon us before we know it but here are some quick news and notes for the first week.

Lab Notes:
  • Each pitcher threw a light, 20-25 pitch bullpen yesterday, and will throw a similar pen on Wednesday
  • First official team workout will be held on Friday
  • Live bullpens will begin on Saturday
  • Lake Erie opens the season on February 22 at Southern Indiana. See the full schedule here.
